Rejoinder is a simple, reaction based game which uses the handset’s accelerometer and touch screen as input devices to interact with on-screen characters. The quicker you react, the more points you earn but if you’re too slow or interact incorrectly you lose a life. There are four interactions which require four different responses on the handset;

• Flip -  rotate phone through 180°
• Jump – thrust phone upwards
• Stretch – slide finger up screen
• Tickle – slide finger up and down screen

As levels progress the time you’re given to make each interaction is reduced until all 20 levels are complete (or you lose all your lives). As you progress you also unlock more characters.

There are some good things about this app. For a start, it’s nice to see the handset’s accelerometer and touch screen put to good use in a game – good on the developers for trying something different. There can also be no complaints on the design front – this is a good looking, stable, well designed app with some pretty cute characters.

However…

Unfortunately, for a paid app there’s just not enough variety in the game play, difficulty or stickability. If all 20 levels can be finished on the second attempt it’s definitely too easy (and they can). It’s all a bit frustrating really, because it wouldn’t take much to improve things – how about additional gestures/interactions and a choice of difficulty levels for a kick-off? Even then though, we’re not sure it would be worth the $2.99 being asked – especially when compared with something like the highly addictive, long-lasting (and free) genius that is Bonsai Blast.

Hopefully the developers at Digital Dandelion will come back with a new version since there’s promise here and they’ve obviously got the skills. For now though, sadly, we’re not recommending you spend your hard-earned on Rejoinder.
