Qik – Live video streaming from your Android device
Qik brings live video streaming to Android via their recently released into the market app (recently as in yesterday if you’re interested). Although Qik has been available for some time on other platforms (as far as we know) this is the first service of its type for Android.
So, how does it work?
After installing the app and starting it for the first time you’re asked to create an account which is associated with your profile on the Qik web site. Basically, that’s it in terms of initial setup, you’re ready to broadcast. A camera view appears, click the record button and you’re away.
In order to share your stream, simply provide your unique URL (based on your username) to whoever you want to see it. You can also embed it into your web site or blog. Just keep an eye on your privacy settings though since all public videos are accessible via the Qik web site.
All videos are automatically recorded and are available on the Qik site via your profile. You can change the privacy settings for each video retrospectively. Handy if you were testing the app in your undercrackers…
Another option is to upload your video directly to YouTube, Facebook or Twitter but you’ll need to modify the settings for each account by visiting your profile page first.
Qik is in alpha at the moment but so far we’ve not found too much wrong with it. We tested in wi-fi and 3G modes and both work satisfactorarily, though unsurprisingly, the 3G option makes for a choppier, more laggy viewing experience.
Surely mobile video streaming will only get bigger so it’s good to see an app delivering a viable solution on the Android platform while the market is still relatively young. Well done Qik.
