The long awaited ‘Cupcake’ Android firmware 1.5 update for the Google G1 has finally arrived in the UK via over-air delivery. Key changes include:

  • Software on-screen keyboard similar to the iPhone example
  • Video recording with integrated Youtube sharing via the new camcorder app
  • New Google Talk app
  • Improved browser speed with better zoom functionality
  • Improvements to the the Youtube app with the ability to log in to your own account
  • Orientation detection (there’s a new option buried in Sound & Display settings)
  • Various cosmetic changes/improvements to the UI

Some really useful additions here – the keyboard and Camcorder app being the notable highlights. It’s really encouraging that Android continues to develop for the G1. Now, where’s that Flash capability?…

Only fly in the ointment is that the handy Useful Switchers app stopped working properly. Hopefully an update will follow.

Edit: The Useful Switchers app was updated after a couple of days so props to the developer!
